Dr. Adem Merter Birson is Musical Director of Koro Arkadaş. He serves on the Music Theory Faculty at New York University. He is a graduate of Cornell University and Queens College, CUNY.
Welcome to Koro Arkadaş. Our mission is to create meaningful music together while fostering a respectful, disciplined, supportive, and enjoyable community environment. Every member is expected to uphold the following standards so that rehearsals and performances remain productive, welcoming, and artistically successful.
1. Respect, Inclusivity, and Community Standards
Koro Arkadaş is built on mutual respect. Every member deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported regardless of their background, identity, or musical experience.
Professionalism: Treat everyone with courtesy and kindness. Harassment, bullying, insults, yelling, or exclusionary behavior will not be tolerated.
No Judgment: Do not make negative comments about another member’s musical ability, vocal quality, or mistakes.
Conflict Resolution: Handle disagreements respectfully and privately. Public confrontations are strictly unacceptable.
2. Rehearsal Etiquette and Musical Process
Successful rehearsals require discipline, concentration, and cooperation from everyone.
Musical Authority
Director’s Role Only: Only the Musical Director may make musical corrections or give direction.
No Unsolicited Input: Do not interrupt rehearsal to offer musical opinions, critiques, or advice to the Director or the chorus.
No Peer Coaching: Do not correct, criticize, or coach other singers unless explicitly asked by the Director.
Rehearsal Conduct
Active Listening: Remain quiet and attentive when the Director is speaking or working with another person.
No Disruptions: Side conversations and behaviors that break the rehearsal flow are not permitted.
3. Attendance, Punctuality, and Preparedness
Consistency and preparation are essential to the choir's success.
Attendance and Arrival
Punctuality: Arrive 10–15 minutes early to prepare.
Absences: Notify group as early as possible if you must miss a rehearsal.
Illness: Stay home if you have contagious symptoms.
Concert Eligibility
Limits: More than 2 absences or repeated lateness will disqualify you from performing in the upcoming concert.
Director's Discretion: The Director makes the final decision on whether a member is musically prepared to perform.
4. Social Media and Public Representation
Members represent Koro Arkadaş both in public and online.
Respectful Communication: Speak respectfully about the choir, its members, and leadership on social media and in public.
Responsible Sharing: Share photos or recordings from rehearsals responsibly and with respect for others' privacy.
5. Conflict Resolution and Accountability
Our goal is to maintain a professional, healthy, and supportive artistic environment.
Reporting Concerns: If you experience or witness any behavior that violates this code, report it privately to the Director or leadership immediately.
6. Disciplinary Process
Violations of this code will result in disciplinary action from the Musical Director, depending on severity and frequency.
Possible Consequences:
Verbal warning
Formal written warning
Suspension from rehearsals or performances
Permanent removal from the ensemble
Note: The Musical Director reserves the right to skip intermediate steps for severe violations.
